Since 1989, Dr. David Friedman has maintained a private practice in Wilmington, NC. Dr. David Friedman, award-winning #1 national best-selling author, and certified chiropractic neurologist welcomes patients with a variety of pains and complaints, including sciatica.

Sciatica is a category of pain related to the compression or irritation of the sciatic nerve, which extends from the lower back through the buttocks and down the back of the legs. It often develops when there is injury or disease in the lower spine, which is vulnerable to such conditions as a herniated disc or degenerative disc disease.

Chiropractors address sciatica by reducing the inflammation and encouraging the lower spine to return to its natural range of movement. One of the most foundational chiropractic techniques for treating sciatica is spinal manipulations, also known as adjustments. These adjustments realign vertebrae that are out of place, thus relieving irritation of the nerve.

Dr. Friedman also uses interferential current, which reduces inflammation and muscle spasms. Ultrasound therapy is sometimes needed to improve circulation to the affected area and to reduce swelling, pain, stiffness, and cramping. Patients who have inflammation along with their pain may also recieve cryotherapy (cold,) or, if they have chronic muscle spasm, hydrolator (heat therapy.)
